Boosting Your Small Business’ Facebook “Likes”

In recent years, small businesses have increasingly turned to social media sites to help them achieve their marketing needs. It’s easy to see why: for a company that cannot afford a large marketing budget, social media offers the ability to reach a wide spectrum of consumers without paying a dime. The combination here of exposure and cost is a small business win-win.

Towards this end, social media-savvy small businesses have built Facebook pages, created Twitter accounts, and worked to synthesize networking platforms with their overall marketing strategies. They have advertised promotions on Facebook and have used Twitter to direct consumers to the business’ website. They have then utilized website analysis techniques from companies like Omniture to insure that their sites and their social media pages are well-integrated.

Even these savvy businesses, however, often fail to pay attention to their Facebook “Likes” – the number of Facebook users who choose to follow their company page. This is an unfortunate oversight, as boosting your Facebook “Likes” can translate into greater success in the social media sphere. Why are “Likes” important? Simply put, there are two main reasons:

Facebook like

1. Exposure

A person who “Likes” your page will see any updates or promotions that you post in their new feeds. This helps to insure repeated exposure among your core customers. It also can expand exposure and bring in new customers because friends of these people will be able to see that your page has been “Liked”, thereby driving more traffic to it.

2. Legitimacy

For a large company, the difference between having 10,000 and 15,000 Facebook “Likes” is a pretty insignificant figure. But the small business can gain legitimacy with the more “Likes” it accrues. Having 600 “Likes” confers more credibility upon your business than being able to only boast 50 “Likes”. Of course, the higher you go the lower the marginal rate of return.

So now that you’ve been shown the benefit of boosting Facebook “Likes”, how can you go about doing so? Here are a few suggestions:

  • Put a “Like Us On Facebook” icon at the bottom of emails and on your business’ website
  • Email friends, colleagues, customers, and family members asking them to “Like” your page
  • Make parts of your page (including promotions) hidden from people who haven’t “Liked” it
  • Put out interesting stories and other content regularly on your Facebook page

With these tips you can hopefully being boosting your Facebook “Likes”, in turn bringing greater exposure and legitimacy to your business. While the Facebook “Like” is only a small part of any social media marketing approach, it can be an important and helpful one nonetheless.

I know it’s cheating, but there are services out there that can help you boost your likes in the beginning. What I have found is that some people don’t like to “Like” a page that only has a few fans. By purchasing a few fans, you can get the ball rolling with legitimate fans.
