Is your site onpage seo friendly (YET)?

Posted in SEO By Rohan

So much has been said about SEO in the past few years that the actual factors that rank a website look like a twisted reality! People are going ga ga over the software and offsite optimization and link building that they are losing out on the most crucial facts that influence a site’s ranking in the search results is not the pagerank nor how many backlinks it has!

Read on to know what actually matters and how search engines rank your content.

1)Relevance

If you thought that PR is the ranking factor as the name suggests then think again! pages are ranked according to 200 different metrics and PR is just one of the factors, but what people don’t realize that search engines rate relevance more than page rank.that is why you often see pages with lower rank , show up high on the results.

So how do you achieve this content SEO?

2)Make content for people and not search bots

.The search engines have clearly stated that the best SEO is when pages are made for the benefit of the people and the best link building is one which people naturally vote you with sharing and bookmarking.

3)Don’t indulge in keyword stuffing

– it’s a thing of the past, and you will be penalized.still as a golden rule sprinkle the prime keyword and its synonyms evenly on the article. Use the keyword in the header.

4)Use Infographics

– Pictures speak a thousand words and nothing goes beyond a picture to explain your point. You don’t have to be a graphics genius for that. Make some basic structures and put in stats in there with the text. Please note here, never make the same points as mentioned in the infographic! it will look like you are reading the image and your readers are not dumb!

5)Have a clean site code

This is more of a common sense than an optimization technique. If you don’t feed the search engines with content when it comes to your site its none other than your mistake! Having bad code means the search engines can’t read your content. What you must understand here is that search engines don’t function like humans. While you may see a page correctly, the search engine can’t see the page if you have an extra bracket or an unclosed code. This way you are losing some major text juice. This is a very serious offense as far as SEO is concerned to not supply with what it is looking for then it’s not possible to get indexed , leave alone ranking for a keyword.

1)Use proper custom permalink structure and make sure that your primary keyword is a part of your permalink and comes at the beginning of the link.

2)URL canonicalization – This is the biggest sin a blogger can do in terms of ignorance. If you have a problem with canonical URL then your site will eat itself up, more about URL canonicalization here. Lets proceed.

6)Internal Linking

This is the simplest and one of the most powerful thing you can do in terms of onpage SEO. Internal structures help you in two ways. First it helps people read along related posts properly and you get anchor text link from a thematic site (even though its your own) and search engines find it easy to reach your new content and index it. So always keep your internal structure such that your old and indexed posts should point to your latest post , so it will get indexed fast and ranked higher.

Let me know if you have been following these methods of organic onpage SEO on your site yet?

The biggest mistake a professional blogger could make is to completely ignore his personal brand or, in the case of running a multi-author blog, building a brand around it.

Does site loading time and template will be any important factor to SEO ? i have faced some problems with plugins too. some plugins are really effecting my posts and other plugins(digg digg is one of them) please can you tell me how can i work on template and plugins for SEO ?

Yes branding is the way to go in today's competitive scenario getting the traffic is not going to make the mark anymore . If the site fails to impress the first time visitor as a brand then the visit is a wasted journey for the blog owner .....

that is the mistake a lot of online enterprises commit , linkbuilding can help you get a PR but relevance is rated higher and i can show you a thousand examples where PR 0 site outranks a PR 8 article directory . Its just not about link building anymore as it used to be , they are rating sites with relevance and site load time and lot of other factors like usability , basically all those attributes which will make it useful for the human .

There are 200 metrics for search engine rankings and PR and Relevance and site load time are a few of them to name. And all of these are more prominent because the new amendment in the google ranking algorithm rates relevance and site load time very high! so you will very frequently see sites with a low PR rank above high PR sites as far as relevance is concerned and template is not directly important but template code does decide the way your sites HTML is served so this will directly affect your load time , always have fluid code devoid of html errors so your site serves text right to the crawler.
As for your plugin issue you can do it all in code without using any plugins , it will gel better with your site be it SEO plugins or Social bookmarking plugins. Infact bookmarking button code is available as an iframe code on their very site , just pick it and hook it to your site if you have thesis otherwise use wordpress shortcode.

Thanks Rohan. I understand that template is really important to blog success. But most of the people dont know how to edit it and change code. also the digg digg manually code, where to add it is a big jargon. i am completely new to wordpress and i am not aware of coding and designing much :( i seriously dont understand why some plugins are troubling me and my blog.

Rohan

No its not a plugin these are just favicon images . Just link them to your social media homepage URL

Yea suraj, i will use that sexybookmarks plugin, why i feel digg digg comfortable is, it is all made so easy to get votes and also it counts the number of votes with good look. so i kep them. I observe that my bouce rate is also increased now :( ihave to remove it now. thank you for suggesting me that plugin :)

Adding and removing the custom iframe code is a bit jargon to me. i better quit this.

Rohan

Yes i meant that! use either macho arts buttons OR burnt wood if time permits :D

Yup Sexybookmarks is good, light on server (relatively) and if you still want to make it better just use plain [ A Href ] links to images of favicons , you can take the social media favicons of burnt wood from my contest page on TL. just link them to your social media accounts like a normal hyperlink and you are good to go :)

Satish, I already said you don't use Digg Digg plugin because it's very heavy in coding, use simple plugin like sexybookmarks.

Seems yours is a premium theme but not thesis , you will need to add the iframe code in your custom.php file in editor and give a shortcode name to it, thats it! u can find a good tutorial at wordpress codex , that will help you mold our site on code alone , plugins are really vicious creatures , they run server side and hence your load time is increased .
