Tips for Picking the Right Domain Name

Posted in Blogging By Guest

Have you made a decision to put a site on the web? While you get everything readymade these days like flash templates and button icons , there are certain matters that just come down to how you choose. Here are some tips for choosing the right domain name for your website.

Folks make some common mistakes while picking a domain name for their website. And such mistakes have a negative impact on popularity of the site. A good domain name of a website helps people to reach your website easily on the web. The following information would give a reasonably good idea of what to keep away from while picking a domain name.

domain-namesShun using hyphens in your domain name. This makes it difficult to remember the name. People usually use hyphens within their domain names and they assume that the would-be customers will memorize them. However, this is not likely. For example, when clients notice a domain name similar to hobbies-for-kids.com they are almost certainly going to type hobbiesforkids.com as it makes better sense and is more logical. So, keep away from unnecessary hyphens.

Avoid using numbers. People use numbers within domain names and they think it is cute. But it only creates incomprehension. For example, a site named education4kids.com is vague. People cannot understand whether the ‘4’ is the number or the word. So, avoid using numbers. This is how you steer clear of vagueness.

Apart from things to avoid, there are certain things that you should do when you are searching for a domain name. First, you should keep in mind that you should always for the .com extension. This is actually the current standard followed by millions of sites across the web. If you use other extensions such as .net, .biz, or .org, you will only take your visitors to other websites. If the name you have selected is not available with ‘.com’ extension, it is better to choose some other name.

Then, you should ensure that the domain name is simple to spell out. There are a lot of bad spellers in this world so it is better to pick a name that is less likely to get misspelled. Lastly, try to get a domain name that is as compact as possible, maybe two or three words maximum. After picking a good domain name, you can use some web 2.0 templates and start the site in a jiffy.

Nice post how to choose a domain name , Finding a great domain is really tough and i prefer to choose a domain that have a keyword in it and have 2 words only.

I prefer godaddy and namecheap if you are looking to buy a new domain because they are the best domain provider and really cheap when you have coupon

is it true that dot com is better in ranking position than dot info?

Thanks for the comment with valuable info.
and yes .com is always better than .info for ranking as well as Google gives more importance to .com, if .com is not available then I will suggest to go with .org .net but NO .info
